The Inside Scoop On Applying To Medical School

Preparation, energy and time are needed when applying to medical school. The admissions process does not happen overnight. It is actually a rather lengthy process that can take up to a year. If you submit the AMCAS application in June, use the summer and fall to complete your secondary’s; have the interview in the fall or winter; you can expect it to be finalized sometime between October and March. You are looking at almost a year for the entire process.

These schools look for those who are smart and have motivation. Medical schools normally accept about half of those who apply. About ninety-six percent of them successfully acquire the M. D. Degree.

Have all the necessary requirements complete. Schools will vary according to what they want you to have before admitting you. Humanities, calculus or biochemistry courses may be needed. Passing the MCAT is required before your application will be considered complete. Submitting your application before you take the MCAT can be done but until the scores arrive, the application is not considered finished.

The ideal situation would be to have all the prerequisites complete before applying. During the year before you apply, take the MCAT sometime in April.

When applying to medical school the application known as the AMCAS is required. This application and undergraduate applications are similar; however, AMCAS applications are not officially accepted until June.

Schools often use secondary applications. These applications have questions that are geared primarily towards that school. You may receive this application after entering your school selection on the AMCAS application.

Interviews at the schools you have chosen are a must. Finding out if you really want to attend that school and discovering if you are the person that represented on paper is the goal of the interview. Normally, the interview session runs from September through March.

The interview and admissions season normally coincide with each other. A decision may be known as soon as October. For schools not on a rolling admissions cycle decisions are made at one time. They are then announced in March. Receiving an invitation for an interview and proper presentation of yourself is the only way to get admitted.

As mentioned previously, this process is long and time consuming. The average time is eleven months from taking the MCAT to knowing if you have been accepted or not.
